For landmen, frequent travel is a necessity. Often, these trips are more than just one or two nights. They sometimes require an extended stay and multiple motels. While everyone would rather sleep in the comfort of their own bed, the road doesn’t have to be as impersonal as it sometimes feels. With access to the right motels, you can find high quality rooms, friendly staff, and convenient pricing that balances out some of the negatives of being away from home for an extended period of time.

General Tips

If you are preparing for a trip in the near future, consider applying some of the following tips for a more satisfactory stay:

  • Shop New. Just like a new car usually trumps a used one, new motels are almost always nicer than older, more rundown motels. If you can find a motel that opened within the last couple of years, it’s likely to have a slight upgrade in room quality.
  • True Cost. Do you calculate the true cost of your motel stay when deciding where to lodge? The price tag on the bright sign isn’t always the best indicator. Include amenities like free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and proximity to job site. All of these can have an effect on the true cost of your stay.
  • Read Reviews. Thanks to online sites and mobile apps, it’s easier than ever to read reviews about a particular motel before choosing where to stay. These reviews are usually quite honest and provide the truth about what a motel is like.

Websites and Apps

Speaking of review sites and mobile applications, the following are excellent resources for motel information while on the road:

  • Kayak.com. This site claims to be the first motel search engine to pull rates from other sites across the web. This cuts down on your need to cross-analyze other sites and neatly organizes all of your options in one place.

Kayak

  • DealBase. This incredibly useful app gives users a highly-customizable tool for analyzing and booking flight, motel, and rental car reservations – all of which you may find useful while on the road. According to unofficial research, SideStep often finds better rates than Orbitz, Travelocity, and Expedia.

DealBase

  • TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor is a staple travel companion for many people. It allows you to search for motels based on any number of factors, including bed size, price, ratings, free breakfast, and more.

Alternative Living: Mobile Homes

If you are constantly on the road for long periods of time and it doesn’t seem feasible to keep shelling out money on motel rooms, consider a mobile home. It has the benefit of being cheaper, cleaner, and much more reliable. You’ll never have to worry about not having a room and have the added benefit of bringing some comforts of home with you.
